Nice GLI! When I read your post, I instantly remembered: That’s how I felt about my Passat, until everything just started falling apart.

I sincerely hope your GLI doesn’t do unto you what my Passat did to me. Some swear that their VWs have been bulletproof-reliable, and I believe them. I probably got a relative lemon, plus VW’s engineering in the B5 era truly was more questionable than it is now.

I had a Circa 2002 jetta once upon a time. It was awesome. I loved it....it had serious quality issues. I have relatives in the auto industry that work for companies that made some of the parts in the car... I would call them and be like yeah.... how come my fucking stereo doesn’t work? http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php…
My dad ran a union so the Jetta was the first non-american car I’d ever driven, I didn’t realize shit wasn’t supposed to break and get recalled ever 3 months on a car.

Anyway, VW, Toyota, BMW-Mini have all had their problems transitioning from a niche market to market leader. GM spent the 90’s churning out shit because their entire ethos was to maintain their number one sales position in any manner possible... which usually meant deep discounting and turning a blind eye to fixing any problem....ford had their tire issues for the same reason plus the Ford and Firestones were intermarried so they didn’t want to call out firestone.... even though they were owned by the japanese at that point... but when the financial crisis hit and the American automakers were on the ropes, VW and Toyota made all the same mistakes.... cutting corners.,, in order to gain market share.... Toyota was so determined to become the world’s largest auto marker they hid a fucking accelerator malfunction, VW apparently couldn’t be bothered to make a hybrid so they just lied a bout their emissions. But yeah... there was something special about them none the less...i loved that car.

IMO what VW did with their diesel emissions scandal is much more brazen than what Ford and Toyota did. From what I have read:

1. The Firestone scandal was not solely the tire’s fault, although Firestone also learned some lessons on more robust design. A major contributor was the fact that Ford decided to lower OEM tire pressures to 26 psi, which increased heat and internal wear. This change was to decrease the chance of a roll-over situation that occurred on a test car. 26 psi is too low for a modern car. What Ford should have done to address this was change the suspension setup. The media blame machine focused on Firestone.

2. While Toyota was caught quietly settling cases and hiding facts from investigators, the SUA scandal really came down to unsecured rubber floor mats being placed on top of the original carpet mats, causing pedal entrapment. There has been no proof that Toyota’s drive-by-wire system had directly caused any accidents. Several high-profile cases were found to be opportunistic lawsuits and concluded pedal mis-application.

These are examples of hiding the truth for fear of PR damage. Not quite the same as literally cheating government regulations.

Yeah.... I hadn’t heard that about the floormats....but the problem with that perspective on VW is that the Ford and Toyota issues could directly cause injury and loss of life. I don’t give a shit whether VW cheats on its emissions tests or not. All the extra pollutants from all the VWs in the world wouldn’t offset the increase in greenhouse gasses caused by the average chinese family being able to eat meat 1 more day of the week. Cow farts are massively more detrimental to the environment than cars. Granted I wasn’t going to buy a hybrid or “clean diesel” anyway. To me it’s just silly bullshit like Gawker saying Buzzfeed plagiarized posts from Yahoo answers,,,is it wrong...yeah...I guess....whatever.......who gives a shit.
